We spent the day exploring the very small island of great Harbor Cay, with a settlement (their name for town)called Bullocks Harbour. The island itself has high cliff banks, with an entrance cut thru into the center of the island that is mostly filled with water as well. A supply boat comes to the island once a week with supplies, and a mail boat comes in daily (I think). The day we walked around the supply boat had arrived and the single grocery store was busy stocking their shelves. The small school on the island was grade 1-12 and as in all the bahamas, the children wear uniforms. There is a big marina with large fishing boats and condos, which allowed me access to wifi.
A lot of men in town take boats to meet the cruise ships that come in to islands north of here, and have parasailing, glass bottom boats and it looks like some people ferries. At the end of every day the boats come streaming back to the harbor to home. Which happens to be right near where we are anchored. Yesterday after our nice relaxing bahama experience, we are relaxing below when a boat zipz by very close to us, and creates a wake that bangs the inflatable dingy into the boat and the tail of the aires wind vane (Michael's new self steering devise he installed before the trip) and ripping a hole in the dingy!
A relaxing day is instantly transformed into a serious problem. We have no working dingy to get off the boat.
After hauling it onto the deck of Fishhead and deflating the rest of it, we spend the evening discussing the best approach to trying to patch this very large rip (12 inches maybe)
Feb 18
This morning we took the patching material we had on board with some rubber cement and have done our best to fix the leak. If you are reading this blog on the 18th you will know it was a success. We have the patching all applied and are waiting 4 hours to let it set before we try pumping it full of air. Wish us luck and keep your fingers crossed.
If it doesn't work we will have to go to Nassau to buy a new Dingy and until then, no getting off the boat.
Yesterday I turned down the opportunity for a fresh water shower at the marina, thinking we would go back this morning!
